Recovery

Back up your wallet on paper and inside photographs.

Your Recovery Sheet is an encrypted QR code you can print. Photo Backup hides an encrypted copy inside ordinary JPEG photographs.

On Apple Watch

Each backup is encrypted with a PIN or passphrase you choose.

Physical
A printed Recovery Sheet with an encrypted QR code
Digital
A Photo Backup hidden inside ordinary JPEG photographs
Protection
A PIN or passphrase chosen for that backup

Before the phone

Apple Watch encrypts every backup first.

You enter the PIN or passphrase on Apple Watch. The iPhone only handles encrypted data for printing, saving, or returning during recovery.

  1. 01Choose a PIN or passphrase on Apple Watch for the new backup.
  2. 02Apple Watch encrypts the mnemonic and any BIP39 passphrase used by the wallet.
  3. 03The iPhone prints the encrypted QR code or hides the encrypted data inside selected photographs.
  4. 04During recovery, the iPhone returns the encrypted payload to Apple Watch for decryption.

Physical and digital

Keep Photo Backup with your important files.

iCloud Drive is one option. Keep the exported ZIP intact so photo services cannot recompress the images and damage the hidden data.

01

Print and verify the Recovery Sheet

A new Cryptograph wallet requires you to print and verify a Recovery Sheet before funding it. The printed fingerprint helps you verify the sheet during recovery.

02

Keep Photo Backup with ordinary files

The encrypted payload is hidden inside selected JPEG photographs. Keep the exported ZIP intact because services that recompress images can damage the hidden data.

03

Restore the rules with the wallet

A backup includes the wallet serial number, Time Lock policy, and Trusted Locations. You choose whether to restore the location data on the new watch.

04

View the mnemonic when you choose

Apple Watch can display the mnemonic if you decide to import elsewhere. The mnemonic cannot be exported to the iPhone in plaintext.

Limits

Choose a recovery secret that can withstand guessing.

Someone who obtains a backup can attempt to guess its PIN or passphrase offline. A longer passphrase resists guessing better than a short numeric PIN.

If the watch and every recovery copy are lost, the wallet is permanently inaccessible. Apple and Perpetua Labs cannot restore it.
